During this period of rapid change in the Higher Education field, the dynamic Academic publishing department at W.W. Norton has an exciting opportunity for an Academic Consultant to join the team.
Job Title: Academic Consultant
Reports To: UK & European Regional Sales Manager
Location: Homeworking/ Central London office with travel in territory
Responsible For: Winning and maintaining adoptions of Norton textbooks and courseware, within a territory to include specific universities in the UK, Scandinavia, and Benelux (Belgium and The Netherlands).

We are a leading publisher of university textbooks with a particular focus on English, Economics, Social Sciences, Bioscience and Psychology. We also offer cutting-edge digital courseware. Norton has a renowned trade list of non-fiction and fiction as well as a professional list, focussing primarily on psychotherapy.
From our London office, we market and sell the lists to the UK, Europe, Middle East, Africa and Indian Sub-continent. Our small staff works in textbook sales, trade sales, publicity and marketing.
The ideal candidate is a recent graduate- publishing experience is desirable, but not essential.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Arranging meetings with lecturers, faculty heads and librarians, to persuasively pitch our texts and courseware.
- Carrying out extensive research on course opportunities, lecturer information and competitor texts in use.
- Developing proficiency in our CRM system, Salesforce. This involves maintaining detailed account and opportunity information, and taking ownership of your own sales pipeline.
- Working collaboratively with the UK and US teams, to move opportunities through the sales pipeline.
- Collaborating with Marketing to source editorial and technology reviewers, and assisting with Marketing initiatives (i.e. webinars).
- Working with US and UK colleagues to integrate our courseware into learning management systems, and assisting lecturers with course design.
- Attending workshops, training sessions and sales conferences, to build strong print and digital product knowledge, and consultative selling skills.
- Building relationships with campus bookstores, to negotiate bundle deals, special prices and project estimated order quantities.
- Providing quotes to libraries and eBook aggregators for the provision of our titles.
The ideal candidate has the following skills, qualities and interests:
- An interest in higher education, with a desire to sell texts across many disciplines and an interest in the rapidly developing world of educational technology.
- A keen appetite for developing and deepening partnership with course leaders, librarians, and academic decision makers across higher education institutions.
- Strong communication and presentation skills.
- Enthusiasm, and a collaborative teamworking mindset.
- Self-motivation, with a commitment to research and the drive to win adoptions- often over long sales cycles.
- Strong time management skills- resourceful and organized, with the ability to balance competing priorities at different points in the academic year.
- Sound IT skills, with an aptitude for quickly mastering a variety of systems.
- Commercial awareness and a goal-oriented approach to meeting and exceeding targets.
